Warning Signs of Suicide

There is no typical suicide victim. It happens to young and old, rich and poor. Fortunately there are some common warning signs which, when acted upon, can save lives. Here are some signs to look for:

Abrupt changes in personality

Unusual sadness, discouragement and loneliness

Previous suicide attempt

Talk of wanting to die

Use of drugs and/or alcohol

Neglect of academic work and/or personal appearance

Giving away possessions

Change in sleeping pattern - insomnia/oversleeping

Family disruptions - divorce, trauma, losing loved one

Unwillingness or inability to communicate

Running away from home or truancy from school

Depression

Rebelliousness - reckless behavior

Extreme or extended boredom

Withdrawal from people/activities they love

If someone you know exhibits these symptoms, offer help! Contact your local mental health agency, therapist or counselor, school counselor or psychologist, family physician or suicide prevention or crisis center.
