NAMI Connection

THE NAMI NATIONAL RECOVERY SUPPORT GROUP INITIATIVE

This is a three year NAMI National Support Group Initiative, based on the old NAMI C.A.R.E. model of Recovery Support but with some more recovery oriented language.  The goal is to provide support groups for all people living with mental illness in large urban areas and insure access to a support group any day of the week within a reasonable traveling distance. In year one of this initiative, NAMI Illinois has stepped forward as one of fifteen states across the nation to bring this innovative Recovery Support Group Model to people living with mental illness.

The Following Steps are vital in establishing NAMI Support groups:

Identify teams of Recovery Support Group Facilitator candidates in urban areas. These candidates  would be people who:

Are in recovery and living well with their illness.

Have either public or private transportation to the Support Group site selected.

Will commit to leading a NAMI Recovery Support Group once a week for at least one year.

Are selected to attend and graduate from the three day Recovery Support Group Facilitator Training.

Identify NAMI Recovery Support Group Champions (may be a Consumer, Family Member, Peer Support Specialist, and/or Mental Health Professional) who is vitally interested in seeing this initiative succeed at the affiliate level.

The Champion/s in each affiliate would help to advertise the support group/s in their area, identify sites, provide logistical support and promote the growth of Recovery Support Groups in their area.

Champions would help identify sites in which to hold a NAMI Recovery Support Group Meeting:

Churches

Mental Health Centers

Civic Centers

Libraries

Consumer Club Houses

Other

Champions would act as a liaison/ representative for the groups to the local affiliate board and the NAMI National Area Manager for direction and support .
