IRS Application for Recognition of Exemption 501(c)(3)

To apply for recognition by the IRS of exempt status as an organization you should visit the IRS site.  Here you can download Package 1023 (which you need to complete for exempt status), Form SS-4 (application for Employer Identification Number, which you must have to open bank accounts).

This web site will provide you with forms and instructions on how to obtain your affiliate's tax exempt status.

Sales Tax Exemption

An entity seeking exemption from sales tax should furnish the Department with the following:

If incorporated, copy of Articles of Incorporation

If unincorporated, copy of organization's Constitution

Copy of By-laws

A narrative explaining purposes, functions and activities of the organization

Copy of Internal Revenue Service letter, respecting federal tax-exempt status, if organization has one

Copy of brochures or other printed material explaining the purposes, functions and activities of the organization

Other information which reflects the purposes, functions and activities of the organization
