Conversations on Mental Illness

NAMI South Suburbs of Chicago has produced a 4-set DVD for both EDUCATION and ADVOCACY purposes’ Conversations on Mental Illness  which includes interviews with:

Dr. Patrick Corrigan , a professor of Psychology at Illinois Institute of Technology, is an experienced field worker and researcher with the mentally ill. His latest book Don't Call Me Nuts!  is a helpful guide to understanding stigma.

 

Mark Heyrman is a professor of Law at the University of Chicago. He teaches mental health advocacy . He is the state of Illinois’s leading advocate for the mentally ill. He leads the Mental Health Summit as a facilitator for some 35 organizations statewide, and he works for Mental Health America, a group that lobbies for the mentally ill, whose establishment was brought about by Jane Adams.

 

Fred Friedman is a lawyer and consumer advocate. He is active in or a board member of many organizations such as NAMI Greater Chicago, Equip for Equality, and Thresholds. He also is founder of an advocacy group called Next Steps.

 

Mary Lou Lowry was Executive Director of NAMI DuPage. During her tenure she led NAMI DuPage into national recognition as the first rated affiliate in the country.

 

Susie Piasecki and Alex Magnus are both DuPage NAMI members and have made numerous In Our Own Voice presentations.

 

Dr. Joseph Troiani is a military man (captain in the Navy), a psychologist, a teacher and activist for the mentally ill. He is also Director of Will County Mental Health Division a large county provider.

 

Melanie Kinley trains case managers at Thresholds Institute. She worked many years in the field as a case manager. She knows the needs of the mentally ill from first-hand, individualized experience. Her current choice of interest is dual diagnosis’.

 

Tony Zipple has an extraordinary depth of experience in the mental illness and health field. As CEO of Thresholds Institute, a private provider, one of the largest of its kind in the country, Tony is a knowledgeable ground breaker in innovative practices for the mentally ill.

 

Jack Starkey is a support group facilitator at LOSS (Loving Outreach to Survivors of Suicide) a Catholic Charities of Chicago program. He works with survivors of suicide on a regular basis.

 

Julie Reichenburger is a Licensed Counselor on suicide and depression at a private clinic in the Chicago area.

 

Laurie Perry is a founder and president of a recently established NAMI affiliate.   Laurie is a strong and creative advocate for the mentally ill.

 

Curtis Taylor is president of a NAMI affiliate South Suburbs of Chicago. He is active in the Mental Health Summit , and was one of the producers and directors of this collection.
